Tony Turner
1939 - 2025 | Sheffield
My Dad was a proud Yorkshireman, who loved life and was generous to a fault. He had a dry sense of humour that not everyone understood, like telling the staff at Weston Park he would have to give up his hang glider now that it hurt to put his arms over his head!. He could turn his hand to anything and loved to potter about on his land and tinker with a Land Rover or tractor. My Dad felt like he’d won the lottery when he was one of the first heart transplants of the millennium. His name is engraved on the BHFs heart sculpture and he went on to have twenty five and a half more years. The “half” was very important to Dad as he wanted to make the most of every extra day he had been given. He knew everyone and he gave them all a nickname. He was unsure about going into St Luke’s at first and I had to promise him that he could come back with us if he didn’t like it, but we hadn’t been there very long when he said “I think it was a good idea to come in, don’t you, but don’t get rid of my bed just yet” Dad was looked after brilliantly by St Luke’s and it allowed his many friends and family to visit. He especially loved the visits from his great granddaughter and our dog Merlin and so did the staff. Dad wanted to donate so that others could be as fortunate as he was to be in such a lovely place.

Uncle Tony meant so much to all of us who were lucky enough to know him. He was one of a kind: funny, sharp-witted with a cheeky, dry sense of humour. He was fun to be around and always had an interesting tale to tell. I remember Uncle Tony’s love of horses. He wasn’t just good with them — he understood them. That patience, that connection he had with animals, is something I’ll always admire. Much of what I learned about horses I owe to him. He was also a wizard with engines. I’ll never forget when he brought my old Peugeot 305 back to life where everyone else had failed. I have so many happy childhood memories of time spent with Uncle Tony, Beverley and the German Shepherds that used to terrify my Mum. He’ll be deeply missed, but his spirit, humour, kindness and passion live on in the people he touched. Thank you, Uncle Tony, for the memories you gave us.

Uncle Tony was always great fun. Living quite far away, I didn’t see him that often but he always made me feel welcome and part of his family. A true character and bon viveur, we will all miss his charm and dry sense of humour. God bless and much love John xx
