It was a pleasure knowing John through our German conversation group. He always brought thoughtful perspectives to the discussion (in excellent German!) and I felt I learned a lot from him. The funeral service was quite beautiful, if showed the love and respect for him from so many people. My heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.

John was part of our German Conversation group for many years, always brought interesting and thoughtful perspectives to the discussion in excellent German! I didn't know him outside of the group but felt somewhat reassured by his presence for all those years and I like to think he helped me think differently about things too. We miss him already. The funeral service showed how much he was loved and respected within his diverse community and how much of an impact he had. It was possibly the most moving service I've ever attended. My heartfelt condolences to family and friends.

Memories of John from 50 years ago: - John as head of department, patiently guiding a newly qualified teacher (of limited competence) through his first years of teaching; - John sitting in the chemistry lab prep room with a small number of other staff and sixth formers, singing madrigals; - John coming to work on Monday morning with grazed knuckles from the weekend rock climbing. See you on the other side, John.
