Dorothy Pointer

Dorothy was born on 6 February 1926. Her family were all musical and Dorothy learnt the piano as well as having singing lessons.
Dorothy went to work at Firth Brown, steelmakers where she worked in the personnel department as a secretary.
Music was a vital part of her life and in 1948 she joined the Sheffield Philharmonic Chorus in which she would sing for many years. She was a season ticket holder at the City Hall classical concerts for many years.
In 1960 she moved with her mother to Strelley Avenue off Abbey Lane. They joined Woodseats Methodist church where she sang in the choir and was regular soloist.
Her brother Stan now had his own family and she became a devoted auntie to Stephen, Celia and Julia and Godparent to Stephen. She also became great friends with the family of Geoff and Margaret Rushton, Geoff being a minister in Sheffield at the time and became Godparent to Steven. In 1973 she went to work for British Steel working in the management training division which moved to Brookfield Manor near Hathersage. Driving everyday into the Peak District to work and back was a joy for her. In 1986 she took early retirement but filled her time with gardening, visits to friends, singing and church activities. She became even more active in Woodseats Methodist church in various roles in the church, through her secretarial skills, supporting NCH Action for Children and also a branch of the League of the Good Samaritan.
She moved in the mid 1990s to a first floor flat in between Greenhill and Bradway. By 2016, aged 90 she was looking for a more accessible flat and found in Southcroft the MHA scheme in Psalter Lane with independent living with communal facilities and care on hand, the perfect place. Dorothy was a lovely caring and kind person who always remained positive throughout her life. Her Christian faith was strong and was expressed in showing love and practical help to others wherever she could . She was single , but had many friends and interests and a maintained a youthful attitude to life. In later 2020 she received a diagnosis of cancer but accepted it with calmness and serenity.
