In loving memory of Doris 'Dot' Coward
Doris (Dot) Coward - born Doris Bancroft on 23rd June 1926, was the youngest of four sisters: Mary, Bertha and Ethel. Growing up in Sheffield, Dot’s bright spirit shone from an early age. She loved sports, especially netball, and her competitive streak often saw her come first in local games.
At just 13, Dot left school and joined a dance troupe, performing in pantomimes and shows at the Lyceum and Empire Theatres. She adored the excitement of being on stage and carried that joy and energy through her life. Over the years, she tried her hand at many jobs, from dressmaking at Barney Goodmans, to working in a brewery (which she absolutely loved!), to chrome plating cutlery, printing greeting cards, and finally working in a café with her dear friend Josie.
In 1946, on her own birthday, she married the love of her life, Frank Coward. Their first house was on Thomas Street, where they raised their children, Janet, Rita, and John before moving to East Bank Road just before their youngest, Alan, was born. Dot always called that new house her 'palace,' and it remained her treasured home until her passing on 30th October.
Dot was the heart of our family, the glue that held us all together. Her kindness, humour, and endless love touched everyone she met. Whether it was her cups of tea and chats around the kitchen table, her dancing spirit, or the way she always made everyone feel special, she left an imprint that will never fade.
You will be loved and missed always, Dot - our mam, nan, nanny nanny and friend
