Clevie Thomas
1936 - 2026 | Sheffield
Clevie “Tom” Thomas was born on the 9 December 1936 in Savanna‑la‑Mar, Westmoreland, Jamaica, the third of six children. Raised in a close-knit farming family, he developed a lifelong love of nature and the outdoors.
At 19, Clevie left Jamaica for England aboard the Santa Maria ship during the Windrush era, arriving in Sheffield in April 1956. Life in his new home was challenging,
he worked long hours in labouring jobs, spending 19 years at British Steel and 26 years at Gunstones Bakery.
In 1960 he met Eleen, the Barbadian love of his life, and they married in 1963. Together they raised six children and created a warm, joyful home filled with laughter and discipline. Clevie said he built a life he was extremely proud of and was best known for his immaculate garden, his fondness for the locals at 'The Everest' pub, and the playful, youthful spirit he shared with his six grandchildren.
Even during his cancer battle, he remained dignified, cheerful and surrounded by his loving family of carers who were supported by St Luke's nurses. At 89 years old, Clevie passed away peacefully at home on 20 March 2026, leaving behind a legacy of generosity, resilience and family devotion.
