Alasdair Buchanan
1981 - 2026 | Sheffield
Alasdair grew up in Edinburgh (and briefly Preston), studied Law at Glasgow Uni and then trained towards the British Mountain Guide qualification. He moved to Sheffield for the climbing, married Liz in 2008 and was a very present father to the kids, Elspeth and Angus. In later years, he worked as a teaching assistant at Bradway Primary and loved it. He never lost his love for the outdoors.

I know Liz from the Explorers walking club during my university days at Bristol. I met Alasdair several times at annual Explorers reunions over the years, several of which have been based in Sheffield or the nearby Peak District. He was always friendly and always showed an interest in the group, even though he didn't know many of us that well at first. I remember going to Sheffield several times and looking forward to finding out what he had been up to. Future Explorers trips will not be the same without him and he will be deeply missed.

Alasdair and I shared many special moments over the years, weekly climbs that became a cherished rhythm in life, and unforgettable ski touring adventures from 20 years ago that I still look back on with a smile. Those times weren’t just about the mountains; they were about friendship, laughter, and the quiet understanding that comes from sharing something you love. He was someone whose presence brought consistency, warmth, and joy. It’s hard to imagine life without him. My thoughts are with his family and all who knew and loved him. I feel incredibly grateful to have called him a friend.

Very sorry to hear of the passing of Alasdair. He was such a kind man and always lovely to chat with. He was great company on our trip south last year to watch the English schools cross country race, in which he got to watch his daughter Elspeth run in, for which he was extremely proud. Such a great loss and sending love to his family at this difficult time.
