Jonathan died in St. Luke's on the evening of Friday 6th September. Since February he had been cared for by both the Active Intervention Centre (1 day a week) and by the Community Nursing Team.
We have set up this page because it was Jonathan's wish that people donate to St Luke's after his death, rather than send flowers. Whether you are able to donate or not, please do share your memories and photos here as a tribute to him.
He is sorely missed by us all.

I have known Jonathan for a very long time, first at school and church where we made our acting debuts, and then we lived very close to each other in two locations when we first had our children, you could say Vanessa and Jonathan followed me to Bradway! I have wonderful and funny memories of those times and cherish them dearly. Thoughts, prayers and love to Vanessa, Benjamin, Natalie and all of his family.

Jonathan was truly one of the nicest people I have ever come across. He was a great colleague and a friend and we worked together on NHS 111 Online. He worked with so much sincerity and passion, great role model for all. He spoken so lovingly of his family specially his two children and he was clearly very proud of them as people and their achievements. My condolences and prayers to all of Jonathan’s family.

Jonathan and I worked together on and off with NHS 111 from 2010 in various roles. His charisma and humour always brought joy to any room. He worked tirelessly to ensure the service was ready in its early days, knowing that his work would affect the lives of many for years to come, just has his life has with the people he has touched personally. Jonathan is a true gentleman, someone who started out as a colleague and became a friend with a shared passion for Lego and 'Stuff'. I will miss. Thoughts and prayers are with you all x

Jonathan and I worked together at the NHS, he was a great colleague and such an uplifting person to be around. I fondly remember our Friday morning bacon sarnies and chats about the bands that him and his children were into at the time. We both enjoyed Chvrches and I’ve been a fan of Pvris since Jonathan gave me the recommendation from his daughter. He spoke about his family a lot and was clearly a much loved dad and husband, I can’t possibly imagine how difficult this must be for you all. My thoughts and best wishes.

Jonathan was a funny, kind, friend and great company. I thoroughly enjoyed spending time with him discussing music and film (in particular I will remember his fondness for Depeche mode and anything Depeche mode related, including rare Greek artists doing whole cover albums of Depeche mode!). Jonathan was well liked by everyone who worked with him, he was knowledgeable, approachable and his passion and positivity for the NHS was clear to see. He will be much missed and please accept my sincere condolences to Vanessa, Benjamin and Natalie for their loss.

I have many memories of playing/singing in the band with you Jonathan at church. Your strong faith helped to keep me on God's path during times of doubt. It was fitting therefore that you and Steve baptised me many years ago. You, Vanessa, Ben and Natalie have been in our thoughts and prayers during your struggle. Rest in peace now.

I thought my new baby brother was a joy and delight with blue eyes and curly blonde hair that old ladies loved to comment on when we were at the shops with our Mum. I was ( and still am ) an extremely proud big sister. As he grew up we shared a secret world of imaginary games and put on shows and concerts - I was always in charge of course and Jonathan was (and continued to be ) very tolerant of my bossy ways. As everyone knows Jonathan had a fantastic, silly sense of humour and we often had to not catch each other’s eyes in polite family situations, and I have clear memories of us laughing so much it hurt! Jonathan went on to a loved brother-in-law to Richard and a gentle and funny Uncle to our 4 children. He was one of the first people to meet our eldest, Rosie and his face was a mixture of pride and terror when he gingerly held her! In recent years I have been able to cherish our regular chats - rekindling our stupid sense of humour and having conversations that you can only really have with your sibling. Jonathan achieved much in his life, in his work and church life but his proudest achievements were unquestionably his solid and loving marriage to Vanessa, his soulmate, and his beautiful, talented , lovely and individual children, Benjamin and Natalie Jonathan faced his illness with so much bravery and compassion for those of us who love him and those caring for him, trying to make it as easy as he could for everyone. I am only just starting to find out how my life will feel without Jonathan, it is unimaginable, but I am so grateful to have had such a lovely little brother.

Memory (the human kind) is a funny thing. It's not the big stuff that stays in my mind about someone but the seemingly trivial things. Is it those that define that person and my relationship with them? The following examples illustrate how I think of Jonathan not just in recent days but over the years I've known him. (1) His mug at work with a photo of his (then baby) son on it - how comfortable Jonathan was demonstrating his great love for his family. (2) How we spent a chunk of a car journey from Sheffield to Leeds (how many time did he do THAT journey!) talking about how a single chicken could provide almost a whole week of meals - a totally nonsensical conversation but showing Jonathan's great capacity for fun and how easy he was to talk to. (3) The little competition we had to spot "celebrities" when out and about, especially in "that there London" - just in the last few days I walked past Harry Gration and immediately thought of Jonathan. These and many other memories of Jonathan will stay with me, little illustrations of perhaps the greatest gift that the Lord Professor (now, exactly WHY did he emulate Robert Winston and adopt that form of address??) shared with us all - he made us smile.

We're so thankful to have crossed paths with Jonathan in recent years. He was a quiet, humble, and caring person, quick to overlook his own trials and ask after others. We enjoyed his quirky, dry sense of humour and his eclectic taste in music. We never once heard him grumble about his illness, rather he stayed positive and full of faith. We're glad that he is now at peace with his Saviour, and continue to pray for Vanessa, Benjamin and Nat as he leaves such an irreplaceable hole in their lovely family.

I knew Jonathan only through work, and cannot say that I knew him well but our paths did keep crossing. I always thought of him as one of the good guys, pragmatic but with a clear moral compass. Your loss is incalculable, but the health service has suffered a great loss too.

Oh Jonathan I shouldn’t be writing this, you should still be with us. I met you when you applied to work with me on delivering a pioneering project to help people access urgent healthcare which became over time NHS 111. You trusted me enough to leave your post in IT to take on this new challenge and in you I saw a person who could add such great value and knowledge to the project. What fun we had and what a legacy you leave. You had great transferable skills which you gave freely and I so appreciated. When I left the NHS I knew that you would continue to flourish and make a difference but didn’t know how poorly you were and for this I apologise. I will remember you for the love you always expressed for your wife and family and your love of clocks and watches. Time stands still for you now but I will always remember you as a supremely trusted member of my team. What a 111 you have left behind you. Love Chris Boyce

Jonathan and I met on a training course in our 20s and we went on to work together for many years, becoming a dear friend. We shared a mutual love for gadgets and chocolate, but more profoundly, for music... I will miss him dearly. His musical taste was wonderfully eclectic, introducing me to so much - including 'Art of Noise - Seduction of Claude Debussy' which we both thought was possibly the finest record ever made. I'd like to think his heaven is filled with music like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MkOmazGN0MM More than that, he leaves a musical legacy in Benjamin and Natalie, that he was so rightly proud of. My sincere condolences are with you all. Sid x.
