There are not the words to express how important Ernie was in the lives of those who knew and loved him. He was our everything. Ernie was the much loved husband of Jennie for 59 years. He was a beloved father of Peter and Suzie, father-in-law to Ross and grandpa to Cameron and Finn. He was the big brother of Sylvia, Jim and Ray. As a kind and respected friend and neighbour, he will be missed and remembered. We treasure our years with Ernie and take comfort that he is now at peace. He fought bravely and with the same dignity he showed throughout his life, always thinking of others and keen not to be a burden on those dearest to him. We are all better people for knowing him and he lives on in each of us whose hearts and minds were touched by this wonderful, intelligent, kind and beautiful man. May we continue to make him proud.

I’m not sure if he had one, but if he did, it would have been the fastest milk float in the west. Top chap will be missed by all.

Thank you for being there and being a valued member of our family as a kind thoughtful man. Always interested in others. You fought so hard but are now at rest.
We remember Ernie with great fondness and appreciation for all the work he did for Brincliffe Edge Woods and the Friends group.

My mum was so pleased when Ernie joined the family, a fellow Londoner, she thought and co-conspirator. A shared language and sense of humour. Everyone loved him. No one in the family ever had anything negative to say - and you had to know us to appreciate that accolade! Everyone comments on his kindness, his intelligence, his sociability, curiosity, and that he was one of life's true gentlemen. Indeed I saw all that too. We were proud our dad played a key role in Jennie and Ernie's wedding. I have fond memories of staying in Witney - Ernie being so kind and easy to be around, for me,as a somewhat anxious young teenager. We have memories of family gatherings and my brother Phillip of family camping holidays. Ernie - one of the very best.

Eryl Tomlinson:- Ernie and I worked together for a number of years after he joined the disability employment service arm of Jobcentre Plus. He was my team leader and we worked together to design and deliver new organisational structures and processes to support disabled people in and into work. Usually calm and purposeful in his approach, we sometimes experienced his acerbic outbursts (usually for a good reason). And we both enjoyed having a humour-filled moan before settling down to work out the right approach. After he retired, he and Jenny became good personal friends and we enjoyed many happy times together both in Sheffield and Anglesey. Geoff Tomlinson:- Ernie and I shared wide musical tastes including good jazz. Swing jazz was central to his interest and in the late ‘noughties and 2010 on, we both enjoyed the live music so easily available in Sheffield pubs around Nether Edge or Ecclesall, including “trad”, and piano or guitar trios playing in a more contemporary style. The Lescar was a regular venue for good local and not-so-local musicians, offered a very decent local beer and attracted a keen crowd. We always walked down towards our destination (Ernie and Jenny living in a house overlooking Sheffield) and were always in high spirits. Conversation during our return journey would be reserved for enthusiastic comment on the music (Ernie always had a very informed appreciation of practically any music) and this led to more practical everyday matters. But the walk down was reserved for a sideways take on world affairs. Ernie was always well informed but easily slipped into an analysis of the state of the world which depended on comparisons with more workaday matters. Each of us would build on this with ever more preposterous notions leading to an always hilarious, surreal and (thankfully) imaginary universe. Ernie was always great fun to be with.

My son Matthew has expressed so wonderfully my sentiments towards my brother Ernie and I will miss him greatly. He will certainly leave a large hole in the lives of all those who knew him well.He was very generous to me in many ways and I could always count on him for kind words of wisdom concerning some of the problems I had in my life.Rest in place big brother you will be missed by many. Thanks to Jenny and the rest of her family and the staff at St Luke's for the love and care you gave Ernie when he needed it most.

It was always such a pleasure spending time with my uncle Ernie, he always made me and my family feel so welcome and at ease when we visited. I used to love hearing his stories about when he was young, which were brought to life with his great wit and dry sense of humour. He was such a kind and intelligent man but was so humble with it. Me and my dad will truly miss Ernie and send our heart felt condolences to my Auntie Jennie and his loved ones.
