My late husband Carl was diagnosed advanced prostate cancer in May 2019. The prognosis was very poor. The doctor said he'll have only 1 year, and now I can confirm that this was very accurate. The sad news brought us a huge shock, confusion and despair. From the day of the diagnosis, our life has never been the same. Carl started to be in St Luke's care at the beginning of 2020 when his cancer pain begun out of control. St Luke's community team started visiting him at home. In February 2020, he needed to go in inpatient centre for further pain control for 2 weeks. He became rather well after 2 weeks, he got discharged with good spirits. Unfortunately it didn't last long. The excruciating pain returned, and he was required the second time round radiotherapy for pain control at the beginning of April 2020. He needed to go back in St Luke's inpatient centre for monitoring the post radiotherapy pain. This time, it was palliative. He passed away on 18th of May 2020 after having developed pneumonia. The care and treatment he received at St Luke's was phenomenal. It was during first lockdown, but they tried their very best not only for him but also for children and myself. We could book in the garden room, and nurses pushed his bed to the garden room so we all could meet up as a family. Same when he wanted to smoke. If you know Carl, you know his love of cigarettes. Every single day, nurses pushed his bed to the smoking area in the garden to make sure that he can have some cigarettes, which Carl used to appreciate greatly. All staff there were respectful, efficient, and dedicated. We cannot thank enough to all the staff at St Luke's and we would like to show our appreciation from Cole family.
