Irene Siew Wan Povey
1945 - 2025 | Sheffield
Born and raised in Roban, Sarawak in Malaysia, Irene had a long and storied life. Irene was always independent and determined as shown in her first career choice of a policewoman working alongside British Intelligence under British colonial rule. Irene's dream was to go to England and through her decision to train as a midwife, she made this dream a reality. Working in a hospital in Carlisle for a number of years before turning her focus to family and raising her children Annabel, Susan and Tyrone. Irene met the love of her life David in Ulverston and together they had a daughter Larissa which completed their family. Ever the entrepreneur Irene had a successful restaurant, a popular café and an Asian food supermarket, as well as teaching cookery classes and translating for Cumbria Constabulary. Through all her successes in life, Irene remained humble, and a friend to all, she was always willing to help others. She was the epitome of strength and courage, she was always cheerful with an indomitable, cheeky spirit and love for life. Irene spent her later years surrounded by her loving husband, her four children and her six beautiful grandchildren who adored her. St Luke's Hospice community nurses provided care to Irene during her courageous battle with brain cancer, their care and support meant Irene could be at home with family in her final weeks. Irene was a beautiful human being, her infectious smile and energy lit up any room she entered. She will never be forgotten.
