John was such a lovely kind man, gently looking after his wife Mary during her final illness. They brought up a lovely family to whom John was devoted. A man of great faith, God bless him.

I was so sad to hear of Mr Rigby's (as I still think of him) passing. I was a pupil at Tapton and he was a friend and colleague of my mum, Elizabeth Cook. He was involved, as a member of staff, in many musical endeavours at the school, and I remember well his brilliant portrayal of Mr Bumble in Oliver. I was very moved that he came to my mother's funeral in February 2020, and it was lovely to see him after many many years. My deepest condolences and much love to all the family.

Thinking of so many happy family memories with John and Mary, Albert and Tess and all 6 of us children. John has been an amazing support to us all in good times and bad. From collecting Bernie and I from teenage parties, to always supporting Paul, Lucy and I when we ended it most - his gentle guidance and outstanding dry sense of humour has meant more than words can say. Our lives have been all the better for John being in it - rest in peace with love always Catherine, Paul Lucy Shuttleworth and families xxx

I first met John when we moved to Lodge Moor. He was always concerned and interested about others. Kind and a man of faith.

Over the years our paths crossed .

His courage and perseverance shone through despite his illness.

I saw John a few weeks before he died and it struck me, how peaceful he was when we chatted.

May his gentle soul rest in peace.

So many fond memories of John... A very supportive colleague when we were both new to Tapton in the early 80's. He had a lovely, calm manner with the students which we could learn from. He and Mary introduced us to St Francis Church and attended both our boys Christenings. He was in many school productions but the one that sticks in my mind was when he played Mr Bumble in Oliver; a rival for Harry Secombe any day! He loved organising things and keeping people in touch. From coffee mornings/afternoons to lunches at Ego with past members of staff. We ladies felt privileged to be invited to join the gentlemen in recent years. He was so proud of his family, a true family man. He will be sorely missed. Thank you John. Rest in peace. May perpetual light shine upon you xx

    Thoughts

The incredible response to this tribute to our dad is a testimony to how much he was loved. I would have loved to thank everyone who has donated in person, on behalf of the family, but this is the best I can do. We miss Dad so much - he just had such a comforting, warm presence and he was always there for us. Our memories of his great kindness will live on in our hearts, together with his wicked sense of humour, his sharp one-liners and his endless amusing anecdotes. Thank you also for your cards and beautiful messages. They will be treasured for many years to come. Don't be afraid to call in and see us sometime. We'd love to catch up with you and share a cuppa -maybe raise a glass to John too. Much love, John, Bernadette and Catherine,
